A priest who stepped down from his position over a "child safeguarding" allegation has been cleared.

The Public Prosecution Service of Northern Ireland has found there was no substance or credibility to the allegations against Fr Oliver Brennan (66).

Fr Brennan, who stepped down as parish priest of Blackrock, Co Louth, 15 months ago, said yesterday that he planned to return to his duties.

He said he felt very hurt personally by the "false and groundless" allegations but had been determined to vindicate his good name and reputation.

In a statement through his solicitors, Tiernans of Newry, Fr Brennan said: "I have always refuted these false and groundless allegations.

"I voluntarily agreed to take administrative leave while the matter was under investigation.

"I now intend to return to ministry in the church," he said.
